Farmer Dan

Dan was in his element checking out this combine. Larry Froese, who helped us repair the alternator for the A/C unit, also builds giant machines for farms in Kansas and Texas. They go for about $250,000 each. Pretty impressive. Fortunately, Dan didn't get beyond the garage.

Oh, my, do I relate to Dan in that combine! I ran combine for six different summers during harvest in the 1990s/early 2000s. Ran a John Deere 8820 three years and a 7700 and 7720 the other three years. I really miss the grass seed harvest--am stuck in an office year-round now. That was one of the beauties of teaching school--the field work in the summer. In another month the combines will be rolling around here again for several weeks--and I won't be in one. :-(

I am guessing that the combine in the picture is perhaps a 7700. Does Dan remember?

Dan, remember? This is the guy notorious for missing his lines during concerts! Just kidding. Actually, this is a custom-built machine assembled by a team led by Larry Froese in Inman, KS. I don't know anything about combines, but from what I understand this is capable of harvesting at a much quicker rate and at greater volume than anything John Deere puts out. now, Larry also uses John Deere equipment for some of his other projects, but this particular machine is custom-made.

Well then, that explains why the combine LOOKS much bigger than the John Deere 7700 which has a side-entry step configuration similar to what's on this giant. I thought it was due to a wide angle lens... The guy picked good colors for his machine! Wish I could see it in person. Of course I can tell it's not set up for grass-seed harvest, so it might be a bit meaningless to me since grass seed is all I know--and of that I don't know a lot.
